Amazon.com Review
 | MBT believes in footwear that makes you better from the ground up. MBT: The idea of Physiological Footwear MBT, Masai Barefoot Technology, was invented by Swiss engineer Karl Müller. During a visit to Korea he made the startling discovery that walking barefoot over paddy fields alleviated his back pain. Back in Switzerland, Müller began to develop a footwear technology that would make the natural instability of soft ground such as Korean paddy fields or the East African savannah accessible also to those, who have to walk on hard surfaces. In 1996, after years spent on research and development, Masai Barefoot Technology was mature enough to be launched on the market. MBTs are now available in over twenty countries, and approximately one million pairs of this revolutionary footwear technology are sold every year. How the anti-shoe is pro-body: Because of the specially designed sole, wearing MBTs significantly improves your gait and posture and relieves pressure on your joints and back. It also exercises a large number of muscles, whether you’re walking or standing. This, in turn, stimulates your metabolism, burns extra calories and speeds up muscle regeneration. In addition, MBTs can have a firming effect on abdominal, leg and buttock muscles. The key to MBT is its patented sole structure. The Shank, PU Midsole with Pivot and the Masai Sensor create a soft surface that is akin to walking barefoot on springy moss or on a sandy beach. This creates a natural instability underfoot, which activates the supporting muscle system and has positive effects on the entire body. | MBT technology mimicks walking in barefeet. | Wearing MBT mimicks walking on soft, natural ground. When the heel strikes, the heel sinks into the ground and the body has to stabilize. When the foot rolls forward, there is a controlled rolling over the balancing area towards the ball of the foot. The toe rolls off (without pressure). | MBT's ensure the foot’s natural rolling movement and optimizes pressure distribution over the whole sole. | The Anti-Shoe MBT would like to help people all over the world lead a healthier, more active and happier life. MBT is convinced that human fitness and health are significantly influenced by the way we walk – this conviction has already been substantiated objectively by many scientific studies. MBT therefore attempts to awaken and strengthen the awareness of physiologically correct walking among people world-wide by disseminating the idea and concept of MBT physiological footwear. The benefits of physiologically correct walking can thus be made available to as many people as possible all over the world, in a straightforward and uncomplicated way. | MBT's Masai Sensor creates natural instability, to which the body responds with increased muscle activity. | MBT's Patented Sole Technology The Lasting Board binds the upper and lower parts of MBTs together. The Shank provides firmness to the sole and also ensures the foot’s natural rolling movement and optimizes pressure distribution over the whole sole. The PU Midsole with Pivot triggers an active rolling movement and exercises a large number of stabilizing muscles throughout the entire body when walking or standing. The Masai Sensor creates natural instability, to which the body responds with increased muscle activity. The rubber Outsole protects the Midsole. |
Amazon.com Product Description This walking shoe from MBT is like no other sneaker you've ever worn. While its upper gives it the appearance of an ordinary shoe, there's magic happening underfoot: The thick rubber sole is specially designed to increase the muscle activity required for each step while also ensuring a natural, comfortable, posture-enhancing gait.

| Customer Reviews: Well Built, Health Benefits May be Exaggerated April 7, 2009 Richard W. Houchin (Chico, California United States) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
I bought a pair of this style of MBT 26 months ago from a local retailer, and I can't say I've noticed any 'health' benefits. However, I have worn the shoes every day (and I do a LOT of walking), and the shoes have held up well.
But! They are starting to get a little worn out now, and I am consider refurbishing my pair, which costs ~$80, apparently.
In my experience with the shoes, their most impressive quality is how well put together they are. When I bought Nike sneakers I would have to buy a new pair every 8-12 months because they'd literally start to fall apart. A little over two years with my MBTs and they are only worn smooth in a few places -- no holes or anything like that.
Like I said, I can't speak to any 'added health benefit' they give. I do a lot of walking and exercise and am young and in good shape, but I attribute that to the exercise, not the shoes.
The shoes are comfortable, but I wouldn't really say they're _that_ much more comfortable than a nice pair of (normal priced) sneakers. The caveat for me is that a nice pair of normal priced sneakers need replacing more than twice as often as an MBT pair.
Oh, if you are a fidgety person you'll probably really like the shoes -- you pretty much have to constantly rock back and forth while standing still with them. That'd probably be annoying as heck to some people, but I'm an ADD antsy fidgety type, so I love it :P
More details:
- These shoes are heavy. I used to buy Nike Air shoes because they were super light (lightest shoes I've ever seen) and I liked that. Going to these heavy shoes was a change for me, but I still find them comfortable -- just different.
- These shoes are platform shoes. You're going to be 1" to 1.5" taller with them. Have fun with that!
- The first few times you wear these shoes, you will feel like you just stepped off a rocking boat. At least, I did. Totally disorienting. Unfortunately, I got completely used to after about two days. It was a cool feeling while it lasted!
- The shoes feel a lot better and are more comfortable if you lace them _tight_ and make sure your heel is seated all the way back in the shoes. Get the right size and make sure it fits well or it's not going to be very comfortable.
I've had a hard time finding actual reviews or commentary on MBT shoes that don't just sound like an advertisement. I hope my review here helps rectify that =)
